Corner Store #20:  Kong's Corner Store and Handy Meats @ Campbell Avenue/ East Georgia St. This image was taken in 1972. Kong has long since moved on. (CVA)

In Strathcona there are numerous other structures built around similar corner conditions.

Nested doorway with triangular vestibule at the corner of East Georgia and Heatley Sts. Built in 1901 the store was known for most of the century as BC Grocery Co.

Walk east for one block and face the south-east corner. This corner house was built in 1905 but the storefront addition was constructed in 1923 and named the Georgia Confectionery. The Freybe Brothers Sausage Company operated out of a long factory building located to the rear. For further Strathcona Corner Store history an excellent resource is linked here. Corner Store #17: Penny's Grocery @ 2934 Kingsway Ave. This little shop could not survive in the wake of a Chevron Gas station and convenience bar opening up next door.

The white tarp half-shrouds the bigger story which is that big market chains such as those owned by the 0.1 percenters, and the big crawdaddy Amazon are eroding small business ecology into obscurity. Cruel irony abounds in this Jimmy Pattison ("Bigger and Better") triptych:

Corner Store #16: Barclay Grocery @ 1500 Barclay St. Also known as Danial Foods there is much on offer from the Mediterranean persuasion.

The old Barclay signage does it for us as it is fully exposed and thoroughly worn with a hint of neon.
